KB Matrix: Building the Data Infrastructure for a More Accessible Afro Haircare Industry

The Problem We Aim to Solve

KB Matrix is a technology platform transforming how clients discover, connect with, and book professional Afro hairstylists across the UK and Europe. Our mission is to create the infrastructure that allows Afro hair professionals to grow sustainable businesses while helping clients access trusted, skilled specialists more easily.

Our award-nominated work focused on a wider problem we uncovered while building KB Matrix: the existence of “Hair Deserts” areas where demand for Afro hair services exists, but access to professional stylists remains limited.

The challenge was never a lack of talent. Across the UK and Europe, there are thousands of skilled Afro hairstylists delivering exceptional services, but many operate through fragmented systems such as Instagram messages, WhatsApp conversations, and word-of-mouth referrals. This makes it difficult for clients to find professionals, compare options, build trust, and access services conveniently.

For stylists, the lack of digital infrastructure means many talented professionals struggle with visibility, client acquisition, pricing confidence, and building scalable businesses.

Building a Data-Driven Solution

The work we submitted explored how traditional data models can fail to capture underserved communities because they often measure what already exists rather than identifying what is missing.

Through KB Matrix, we approached the problem differently. Instead of only looking at registered businesses or existing transactions, we considered wider demand signals including community engagement, search behaviour, population insights, and direct conversations with clients and professionals.

This helped us uncover a pattern: when a service is difficult to access, the absence of transactions does not necessarily mean there is no demand. It can mean the infrastructure required to connect supply and demand simply does not exist yet.

Our research into Hair Deserts demonstrates how technology can be used not only to optimise existing markets, but also to identify hidden opportunities and create more inclusive digital ecosystems.

Creating Infrastructure for an Underserved Market

KB Matrix is building more than a booking platform. We are creating a marketplace designed around the realities of Afro hairstylists and the communities they serve.

For clients, the platform provides a trusted way to discover professionals based on location, services, and expertise.

For stylists, KB Matrix provides tools that support business growth, including improved visibility, client management, and opportunities to build stronger relationships with customers.

Our vision is to move away from a fragmented industry where finding a trusted stylist depends heavily on personal networks, and towards a future where Afro hair professionals have the same digital infrastructure and opportunities available across other service industries.

Why Being Shortlisted Matters

Being shortlisted for the UK Business Tech Awards is an important milestone for our team because it validates the importance of solving a problem that has been overlooked for years.

This recognition represents more than the technology we have built. It represents the communities behind the problem and the importance of creating solutions that reflect real-world experiences.

Building KB Matrix has shown us that many market gaps are not caused by a lack of demand, but by a lack of visibility. When communities are not properly represented in the systems used to understand markets, their needs can remain invisible.

The shortlist reinforces our belief that inclusive technology is not only about creating new products; it is about building better systems that allow more people to participate, grow, and access opportunities.

Looking Ahead

As we continue expanding across the UK and Europe, our goal is to strengthen the infrastructure supporting Afro hairstylists and the wider beauty industry.

We are using technology to solve a practical problem while creating a foundation for a more connected, transparent, and accessible ecosystem.

Being recognised by the UK Business Tech Awards gives KB Matrix the opportunity to share this mission with a wider audience and continue conversations around inclusive innovation, hidden demand, and the future of digital infrastructure.

“Being shortlisted for the UK Business Tech Awards represents more than recognition for KB Matrix. It shows that the problem we are solving matters. For years, Afro hair professionals and clients have relied on informal systems because the right infrastructure did not exist. We are building technology that creates visibility, access, and opportunity for a community that has been underserved for too long.”
